P003 → Thamesis Doorway

Thamesis Doorway, 2025, installation with acrylic mural, and acrylic on cardboard and papier mache, dimensions variable.

Thamesis Doorway highlights and performs the dramatic widening of the space from the corridor into the open plan living area, and the potential for sociability that this creates. Decorative motifs link the living room to the urban landscape of Southwark, particularly Southwark Bridge, and the River Thames. The installation explores how the private, secular home might be enriched by framing it in terms of local myth and geography. The frame’s reference to the Thames, including the small head of the goddess Isis, worshipped by the Romans in London, is an ornate way of thinking about how river water enters the home through hidden pipes that connect it to the outside world. Water - an elemental liquid resource distributed by the private utility company Thames Water - opens up questions about how porous a dwelling can be, in terms of the resources, energy, labour and people that flow through it.
